It was announced earlier today that the Toronto Marlies have recalled goaltender Ken Appleby and forward Ben King from the Cincinnati Cyclones. Marlies forward Sam Stevens was later assigned to Cincinnati in order to even out the AHL roster.
In response to these moves, Cincinnati signed goaltender Anthony Shrum, per the Blue Ridge Bobcats Facebook, who was with the team during training camp and held his own decently well from what I saw. Shrum joins the Cyclones from the FPHL’s Blue Ridge Bobcats, where he posted a 3-1-0 record through eight games, with a 3.36 goals-against average (GAA) and a 0.919 save percentage (SV%).
NOTE: Later today, it was noted that Shrum is no longer joining the team this weekend.
Stevens has yet to appear in an AHL game this season and was likely sent down to the ECHL level to find his game. In 21 games last season, the 25-year-old put up only four points (two goals, two assists) with the Marlies. Before joining Toronto in the 2023-24 season, he spent his final collegiate season with the Boston University Terriers, putting up 17 points across 40 games played and finishing plus-15 on a Frozen Four squad.
King has been up and down from the AHL so far, but in Cincinnati, he’s put up the second-most points on the team with eight (three goals, five assists) in eight games played, only trailing Ryan Kirwan by one. He’s appeared in only one AHL game this season, despite having spent two full seasons in the AHL the past two seasons in Manitoba and San Diego.
In seven games played with Cincinnati, Appleby has a 3-3-0 record, 2.88 GAA, and a 0.899 SV%. He has yet to appear in an AHL game this season and will likely be back in the ECHL soon. This move was made after Artur Akhtyamov was called up to the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier today.
It is possible that Cincinnati may have to go with Kyle McClellan for the three games this coming weekend: Friday at home vs Toledo, Saturday/Sunday on the road vs Kalamazoo. Shrum will serve as the backup until Appleby returns.
